Yumekui Merry! episode #1

After watching the preview for this anime, I immediately had high hopes for it and after watching episode 1 (finally), I have to say that it doesn’t fail to deliver. One thing that you must know is that the setting may confuse you in a way that can make the story itself a hit-or-miss for the people watching. It’s one of those anime’s where you’ll have to watch more than one episode in order to decide if you want to continue watching the series or just pass on it. This fact itself is kind of disappointing because of the thrills that have yet to come. I have to say though that this series has a set of great character designs and distinct personalities that it is difficult NOT  to grow attached to them. Plot-wise, the story is pretty good despite all the questions that you have yet to answer from it. As I said before, you may or may not find the plot to suit your fancy but it still feels like a waste to pass on it because of its future potential.

So far, we are introduced to a boy named Fujiwara who has the power to see multicolored auras on a person just by looking at them. Because of this ability he has weird dreams of cats at war, always chasing him till the end of his dream (the cats look AWESOME too~). Living in a city (where we feel unfamiliar about), he has a goal to become a successful author (which we can only assume that he wants to write about his strange dreams), however he encounters an event where a strange purple haired girl ( Nightmare, Merry) falls on top of him (which may sound cliché to you if you have watched a lot of ecchi’s before this).  It is pretty typical I know, but I am glad to say that main character’s personality does have some realism to it. Merry is a mysterious, cute, powerful girl (that looks like she is around the age of 17) and has a bit of a tsundere attitude. However she is not perfect (just how people SHOULD be). Due to her amnesia, she is technically a lost lamb in the city. On the other hand, Fujiwara MAY seem like an ordinary boy to you but deep down inside, I feel that his personality will be dynamic throughout the story as he adjusts to the scenario’s that he falls upon. I cannot help but say that I LOVE the art-style for this anime and I hope for more epic events to occur later on in the series.

For the sound and music, I am extremely satisfied with work of their soundtrack. It really does bring out the anime in a more colorful and meaningful experience.  However the opening itself feels kind of bland having 70% show only Nightmare merry and exposing future events of the story. I know that opening must include a lot of scenes and events to keep their audience interested but it would feel better if they hid some of  it so it will be seen  as a surprise later on. I mean, come on! It feels like I am watching a spoiler before my very eyes seeing the two main characters and their so-called “secret past”. Not to mention that it exposes how the relationship between the two grows throughout the series.

Overall, I have enjoyed watching this episode (even though I wasn’t 100% satisfied). The art is awesome and it draws you in, the story is great although some may not find it that way, the sound and music were well-done and it nicely fits into each mood/setting, the characters and each of their personalities were great and hopefully grow to be better later on. I was not satisfied with the opening and I hope that it will not ruin my experience for future events. For all of you reading this, I recommend watching this anime for yourself and hopefully you have the same amount of enjoyment from it as I do.

Story- 8.9/10

Art- 9.5/10

Sound/Music- 8.5/10

Characters-  9.5/10

Enjoyment- 9.5/10

Overall-  9.5/10

ive been wondering about the thing with the “past” in hte op.. i mean, it cant really be since merry is a dream cant it? or is it that our hero knew the person merry is using as a vessel now?

I believe that Merry’s vessel was the Hero’s childhood friend. The anime did make some clear hints in the first episode. I guess only time will tell though. ^w^
