Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka? episode #1

If you were expecting this anime to be similar to “Highschool of the Dead”, then prepare to be disappointed.  However, if you already knew that this anime was just another one of those action/comedy experiences and you still plan on watching, you will be glad you did. I am not saying that this episode is “fantastic” or anything, but it will lure you into wanting to watch more. Frankly, this anime is addicting in its own way but it probably won’t be something that you will remember 5-years later.

First, lets talk about the story. This episode starts off by introducing the Hero of this anime named “Ayumu Aikawa” who is a typical high-school student, except for the fact that he is a zombie.  Now it may seem lame that he is not one of those decomposing corpses that constantly hungers for flesh, however the creator  made a interesting approach to creating their own ideas of what a “zombie” could be like. Basically, the hero cannot be killed by anything or anyone (it seems…) but has a weakness to sunlight (he will wither dry if exposed to it.) . Add a necromancer from hell (who resurrected the hero), and a mahō shōjo (a magical girl from a magical world) and basically you will get the gist of the story. The story is pretty mediocre but its comedic scenerios can keep you hungry for more. Even though the story isn’t AMAZING (as most comedies usually aren’t),  that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to it (aka: Lucky Star, K-ON). I was personally quite happy that the character’s goals were simple and easy to follow and I hope that there is more I can expect from it. I mean, what is more interesting than a magical girl with a CHAINSAW that can make loli clothes randomly appear on the user (whether it be male OR female) while ripping monstrous bears in half? Exactly.

The soundtrack for this anime was surprisingly decent and you can simply expect it to fully bring out the atmosphere provided with the series. The opening song had its moments but it felt lacking in its own way. With that said, I must mention that art-style is great but sometimes it can be lacking color at certain points, not to mention that the monsters are funny and hard to be taken seriously. The character designs are satisfying amongst itself and their given attitudes are quite predictable but then again, I never expected much to begin with. Overall, this anime is a blast to watch despite the fact that the story is lacking. However, this will not keep me from watching every last bit of what is to come~

Story- 6.8/10

Art- 7.8/10

Sound/Music- 8.5/10

Characters- 6.5/10

Enjoyment- 8.6/10

Overall- 7.8/10

I like the way you deliberately missing out the best part of the episode in that write up. Keeping the surprise for the viewers. Nice work.
