Nichijou – Episode #01

So here we are, the next slice-of-life yonkoma comedy series from KyoAni who brought us Lucky Star and K-ON!. As a whole it’s yet to click, but the production quality is so good sometimes you feel like forgiving them.

So where do I start? The usual “godamnit-KyoAni-stop-making-crap-series-like-this-where’s-my-Little-Busters???” rant? or “omg-this-is-so-relaxing-and-awesome” praise? To be honest, I kind of have given up on speculating their business decision. As long as they are making decent series that has wide range appeal, they will continue to make them. They know what they can do, and they are doing it well.

Nichijou however is a bit different. It’s not like Lucky Star with all the otaku in-jokes, nor does it have the music element (even if some people arguing that it’s non-existent) of K-ON. What it seem to focus on however, is the level of denpa between the character interactions. Think Pani Poni Dash, the ultimate denpa show, with all its absurd random outbursts. That’s what Nichijou has to work at in order to excel and makes itself a memorable within this season.

As a A list studio, KyoAni didn’t disappoint in term of the level of animation and visuals. Everything looks clean, simple, and smooth. There a sense of soft colouring in the way they presents the series, and it might add to the unique tone well some time down the future. Not to mention the colours are crisp and bright. The sound direction feels really good as well.

However as a gag comedy series, all the technical aspects means nothing if the jokes themselves aren’t funny. Sadly to say, at the moment I’m yet to literally lol at any of them. Yes some skits are quite interesting and locked my mouth in a grinning position, but in terms of actually laughing it has yet do achieve it. It’s more miss than hit in this episode. Not to say that the whole series will be bad, as both SYD, Lucky Star, and even Mitsudomoe,  took their time to become great in their own rights, and hopefully Nichijou will follow suit. There’s enough random elements there for it to work, just needs the right scenarios. I’d already heard from a number of people who think that this “is awesome”, so maybe it’s just me.  😛

Prior to this season I had very little expectation on this series. It’s sufficient to say that the first episode, despite being better than the episode 0 OVA, still failed to hook me in. I might check out another couple of episodes for it to click. I still suggest people who like the random gag comedy series to check this one out. Maybe the humor will hit you, who know?  7/10

Heck, just come check out this great OP sequence

7/10 sounds about right. This show has been getting crazy super praise and I enjoyed it as a whole, but I was barely getting more than a smirk for about 2/3 of the episodes. The goat kid and shinigami’s made me lol though.

Hmm… I enjoyed the first 1st episode. It seems Kyoani has some pretty high hopes for this series.

The good thing about this show is that they don’t drag on much for each skits. They just got on with the job and move on.
Half of the joke will be awesome while the other half will be lame. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s a glass half full or half empty.
or if it’s even a glass at all.
